Hilary Weston is a travel and history writer who lives in Framlingham and here she publishes for the first time extracts from the adapted diaries of her great aunt Gertrude (Gertie) Tootal. The diaries came into her possession in 1987 on the death of her grandmother Kathleen, Gertie’s younger sister. They tell the tale of an upper-middle class London family and Gertie’s love affair during the First World War.
